Apparently the brothers wanted wind (for lift), sand (for possible landing), and privacy (because patents) to pursue their passion for flying. Isolated and tiny Kitty Hawk supplied all three.
It was inspiring to see the field where it happened, and I have to say, it looks and feels like a little rural airfield: flat, expansive, and breezy.
This post is dedicated to my two (that I know of) flying friends: John Maletta, and Doug Busch. If you haven't made a pilgrimage here
guys, it's a nice place to visit.
Cool place. We vacationed in the Outer Banks a few times when the boys were little. Lots of kite flying and rolling in the dunes at Jockey's Ridge.
